What Kind of Seed Do You Use in Your Bird Feeder?
by Jason Scheers
So you have your new bird feeder and you bought some seed from the store but your just not attracting the kinds of birds that you want. This can be frustrating to say the least but sometimes birds will only come to your feeder for certain types of seeds.
Seed Mixtures: These are the most common types of seeds that you might find at any store. These are a great starting point and will attract several species of birds but not all of them. These seed mixtures usually have quite a bit of filler seed in them. These are seeds that no bird really likes but it fills the bag.
Sunflower Seeds: Filling your bird feeder with sunflower seeds will attract more than birds, it will also attract many rodents, mostly squirrels and depending on where you live, it will attract rats. So might have a battle at your feeder. Sunflower seeds will also attract woodpeckers, cardinals, blue jays and chickadees just to name a few.
Thistle Seed: This is the most expensive bird seed on the market but it attracts some special birds but mostly finches. If you have a feeder full of thistle seeds, your feeder will soon be swarming with many kinds of finches, the most notable being the American Gold Finch.
Suet: This is a cake like bird feed that is often hung in small cages. It is used to attract wood-peckers.
Whole Peanuts: Blue jays love peanuts. Watching these clever birds break into a peanut is always priceless. With peanuts you have more squirrels to deal with and possibly rats.
Now that you know which seeds to fill your feeder with, start filling them up and remember if you fill it, they will come.
